For those who might be wondering the big bags full of straw at the western end of each pond are a trial of algae control. Overseas experiments have shown that barley straw loosely packed and placed in the ponds can after a few weeks supresses algae growth. It does not kill existing algae but inhibits new algae growth. Algae has been an increasing problem over recent years so we decided to try this approach
